Warren Unveils The R.I.C.K. Plan On Humility
Posted on 11 June 2009
Pastor Rick Warren, well-known for creating memorable acrostics to convey his groundbreaking church initiatives like PEACE, SHAPE and CHURCH, has
unveiled his latest teaching on Christian humility called the RICK Plan. Says Warren, "As Christians who have received greater spiritual insight than
people of other religions, we can easily fall into the trap of acting superior. But Jesus said we need to humbly serve others without concern for our
preeminence in the world, and that's what my new RICK Plan is all about."
RICK stands for: Remember others first; Imitate Christ; Create opportunities for service; and Keep your ego in check.
Warren believes his new strategy is essential for the success of the Church and plans to implement it throughout his Purpose Driven network until RICK covers the globe. "I've come to realize how important humility is, and I want other Christians to understand it, too," Warren explained. "In fact, just the other day I was telling Bono how I practically created another Pentecost at Saddleback's last membership drive. All of a sudden the phone rings and it's a call from the White House. It was Barry wanting some pastoral advice. This is the kind of humbling situation that I hope others can learn to experience someday, too."
When asked about the critics who charge that his new global humility plan is just a veiled marketing campaign to force his personal agenda on the Church, Warren responded, "Hey, the RICK Plan isn't about me."

So I'm not the only one who gets annoyed when a celebrity says:
"It was really humbling that I when I won those 10 awards/tennis Grand Slam/Player of the Year etc."

(EGG) - For years now Mr. Warren has been contemplating the question of whether humility can be taught or is it an innate character trait. It seems that what prompted this consideration of humility and compassion was an encounter with great arrogance and condescension. It surfaced when someone other than himself publically stated, "The future of religion should be a focus on humility and commonalities to create a robust and productive global society." How dare they!
Mr. Warren quickly went to work developing four ways to cultivate humility (unveiled today as the R.I.C.K. Plan). The last two letters of his tricky ricky acrostic (Create opportunities for service and Keep your ego in check) stand for ways to cultivate personal humility on a small scale in your everyday life, and the first two (Remember others first and Imitate Christ) encourage a large scale, more global sense of humility.
Mr. Warren offers this plan with a commitment to humility and a conviction that the R.I.C.K. Plan will not work unless people understand that it comes from his own commitment to the wellbeing of everyone on the planet, not from a desire to advance his power or influence. Having the Purpose Driven network administer the Plan makes it clear from the start that this Plan is not another puppet for Saddleback church.
Mr. Warren also insists that the plan be implemented with this clear message: although the Saddleback Church has superior numerical, technological and material success, he and its members do not equate that with superior moral or cultural wisdom. On the contrary, the R.I.C.K. approach must reflect a deep humility and a spirit of repentance for the ways that the Saddleback culture has dominated the evangelical planet through aggressive outreach, environmental manipulation, and a growing materialism and selfishness.
